Eclipse Veterinary Software vs. Vivetra for equine practices

The short answer: Eclipse Veterinary Software is an established equine specialist in the UK and Ireland. It says around 100 equine and mixed practices use it across the UK, Ireland and Holland, and it was originally developed for Rossdales in the early 2000s. Its strengths are a vendor-independent PACS that drives your imaging machines from booked appointments and an iPad/iPhone app that works offline. If imaging and offline yard visits are the center of your day, Eclipse is very hard to beat, and we’ll say so.

Vivetra’s Equine service is a different trade: one flat $200/mo with unlimited vets and managed hosting included, and an owner portal built around how horses are actually owned and kept, with co-owners, yard managers and trainers. Every Eclipse fact below is quoted from Eclipse’s own site with a link, checked on the date shown.

Which is right for you?

Stay with or choose Eclipse if…

your practice runs on digital radiography, ultrasound and other modalities that should feed straight into the horse’s record, your vets work offline on iPads at the yard, or you’re a hospital that wants a long-established UK equine specialist with on-site training.

Consider Vivetra if…

you want one flat price, $200/mo, however many vets you add, with no server to look after. You’d also want horses with several owners or a yard manager in the picture to be handled in the software rather than by your front desk, and imaging integration isn’t a must-have.

Co-owners and yard managers: the part we’d demo first

A horse owned 60/40 by two people gets a separate invoice for each co-owner, recorded at that ownership share, so one owner isn’t fronting the bill and chasing the other. Separately, an owner can grant their yard manager or trainer read-only access to their horses: identity, schedule, vaccination status and care notes, with no billing and nothing editable. The grant can be narrowed to one yard or one horse and revoked by the owner at any time, and your practice can switch the feature off. Grants don’t expire on a timer, though. They last until the owner revokes them. This describes our own product. We aren’t claiming Eclipse lacks an equivalent, only that we didn’t find one stated on the pages we checked.

Where Vivetra fits

Vivetra isn’t a like-for-like replacement for a specialist system originally developed for Rossdales in the early 2000s. It’s a flat-rate, fully managed alternative for practices whose pain is pricing that grows with the team, owner admin and server upkeep rather than imaging. See the Equine service or the UK & Ireland equine comparison.

Where Vivetra genuinely falls short

  • No PACS or DICOM integration. Eclipse drives CR, DR, MRI, CT, ultrasound and endoscopy machines from booked appointments and files images to the right horse automatically. Vivetra doesn’t do this.
  • No dedicated offline app. Eclipse Mobile runs on iPad and iPhone and works offline. Vivetra runs in the browser, with no dedicated offline field app.
  • Yard-manager grants don’t expire on their own. There’s no “access for 30 days” option yet.
  • Newer vendor. Eclipse has been in equine practice since the early 2000s, and Vivetra has nothing like that track record.

Questions about this comparison

What is Eclipse Veterinary Software?

It’s a practice management system for equine and mixed practices. Eclipse says approximately 100 practices use it across the UK, Ireland and Holland, and that it was built for equine hospitals, ambulatory practices and small-animal referral centers. It was originally developed for Rossdales in the early 2000s. Its modules include diary, billing, pharmacy, a mobile app, PACS, Refer-a-Case and an optional laboratory module.

How much does Eclipse Veterinary Software cost?

Eclipse doesn’t publish pricing. Its site invites you to call and arrange a demonstration. Vivetra’s Equine service is $200/mo flat, with unlimited vets and staff and managed hosting included.

Does Eclipse work on a Mac or offline?

Eclipse says its practice management system works equally well on PCs and Macs. Its Eclipse Mobile app runs on iPad and iPhone and works when the device is offline. Vivetra runs in any modern browser on any device, but it doesn’t have a native offline app.

Can Vivetra replace Eclipse’s PACS?

No. Eclipse’s PACS is vendor-independent and uses DICOM worklists to send booked appointments to imaging machines. Vivetra has no PACS or DICOM integration. If imaging integration is central to your practice, that is a real reason to stay with Eclipse.

Is Vivetra available in the UK and Ireland?

Yes. Vivetra is live for self-serve signup in the UK and Ireland, as well as the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, at the same flat number shown in your own currency.
