What software handles hospitalised patients and treatment sheets?

Updated November 2026. Every outside fact links to its source.

The short answer

You need an electronic treatment sheet: scheduled orders on an hourly grid, check-offs that record who did what and when, fluids and vitals, and a board showing every inpatient at once. Options include add-ons like Vet Radar 1 and SmartFlow 2, or a practice system with sheets built in.

Vivetra Hospital is a newer system with the sheet and ward board inside the practice system, at $200/mo flat. Its sheet doesn’t update live across devices and can’t be printed yet.

What a treatment sheet should get right

  • Contemporaneous, attributable entries. The RCVS expects records to be clear, accurate and adequately detailed, made at the time or as soon as reasonably practicable after 6. A sheet should stamp every check-off with a person and a time.
  • Overdue that’s impossible to miss. Missed doses on overnight shifts are the point of the tool.
  • Fluids and CRIs charted across time, with rate changes kept.
  • A whole-ward view for the doctor and the next shift.
  • The owner kept informed without a phone call every hour.

How Vivetra Hospital handles it

  • Hourly-grid treatment sheet. Recurring orders are scheduled in full when ordered. Each treatment shows overdue (red), due this hour (yellow), done (green) or skipped. Every check-off records who and when, and corrections are kept.
  • Medication orders with an allergy check at order time.
  • Fluids and CRIs as a bar across the hours they run, with rate-change history and bag changes.
  • Vitals, including critical-care values.
  • Ward board grouped by triage acuity, with code status and overdue counts. It refreshes automatically.
  • Code status (CPR/DNR), anaesthesia records, and shift handoff notes.
  • Admission to discharge. Admit, transfer, discharge or record a death, with structured discharge instructions sent to the owner’s portal.
  • Owner updates. Staff publish status updates to the portal, optionally with vitals and today’s care, with email/SMS notices.

Where it falls short today

  • The sheet doesn’t update live. The ward board refreshes itself; the treatment sheet shows others’ check-offs on reload.
  • No offline check-offs. Sheet entries need a connection (some hospital forms do queue offline).
  • No printable sheet.
  • No push alerts for due treatments; overdue counts show on the board and dashboard.
  • No cage or kennel location on the board yet.
  • No automatic charge capture. Treatments don’t bill themselves.
  • Controlled-drug doses are logged separately in the register, not automatically from the check-off.
  • We’re new, with no comparable track record.
